The Work in Progress Data Capture System uses barcodes to collect real-time
production data at multiple workstations. As jobs are received and processed at each
station, the operator uses a barcode scanner to enter information about the job. The date,
time, and workstation identification are captured automatically by the software; other
data fields are defined by the system manager (job number and operation code, for
example). The data captured at the workstation is automatically stored on a central
network database. From there it can be used by other software packages, including order
management and production scheduling systems, spreadsheets, databases, and productivity
analysis tools. Data is stored in the popular Microsoft Access database format. A
Job Tracking "Starter Kit" is now included with our WIP Data Capture software.
WIP provides accurate and efficient collection of job data on the factory floor; the Job
Tracking Starter Kit provides basic management and display of job-related information.
Use barcodes to accurately and efficiently record the progress of orders
through manufacturing, assembly, or other processes:
Track status of orders
Verify arrival/completion times
Analyze productivity
Capture time data for costing without visiting each workstation.
The type of data captured and the appearance of the screens are centrally
controlled by the system manager. Changes made by the system manager appear
automatically at the workstations.
Software Operation
Serial scanners are connected to ports on one or multiple workstations. As barcoded
products/projects are scanned at each station, the centralized database is updated to
reflect each item's progress. Reports can be generated from the WIP database
directly using Access, Crystal Reports, or other report programs. Simple queries
created in Access can be used to transfer information to other databases.
File Formats
WIP Data Capture software posts data to Microsoft Access database files.
Barcode Scanners
The workstation software is designed to work with any scanner equipped with a
serial data interface. Many styles are available, including wands, hand-held lasers, and
even fixed mount devices for unattended operation. Scanners are available in different
levels of hardness for commercial/retail, light industrial, and heavy
industrial application. Multiple instances of WIP Data Capture can run on one
workstation to support multiple scanners.
Printing Barcodes
The WIP Data Capture software includes a set of barcode fonts that can be used to
create standard Code 39 barcodes using any Windows word processor, database, or
spreadsheet.
